The supergiant Norilsk-Talnakh nickel-copper-platinum deposits: the exploding orebodies that changed the world [video]
This talk was given by Dr. Stephen Barnes to Monash University on 29th March 2023
Abstract:
The Norilsk-Talnakh ore field in Arctic Siberia contains some of the world’s most valuable individual orebodies of any type, containing over a trillion dollars worth of Ni, Cu, Pt and Pd. They are remarkable not just for their size but also for their volatile-rich character. This talk shows evidence for transport of sulfide liquid by attachment to gas bubbles, argues for an explosive mechanism for creating the orebodies and the intrusions they sit in, and makes the link to the exactly synchronous Permo-Triassic extinction, the greatest mass dying in the history of our planet
