Reviewing impacts of housing systems for cattle and poultry welfare

Livestock animals are kept in many different types of housing systems and understanding how these variable environments impact their behaviour and welfare is critical to be able to improve it. The behaviour and welfare impacts may also be specific to management and climatic factors associated with certain countries or regions. Reviewing the current literature on what is known as relevant to an Australian (as well as worldwide) context provides a comprehensive document for researchers and industry alike. It also provides an assessment of knowledge gaps and directions for future research. The CSIRO Animal Behaviour and Welfare Team has published recent reviews on the welfare of beef cattle in Australian Feedlots, free-range hen welfare, and the impact of housing systems on laying hen skeletal health.
