Replacing the use of mercury
CSIRO in collaboration with Clean Mining has developed and demonstrated in Papua New Guinea a simple process using safe reagents to replace the use of mercury and recover more gold. The demonstration project involved collaboration between PNG’s Conservation and Environment Protection Authority (CEPA) and Mineral Resources Authority (MRA), and the Australian Government’s Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW), the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO); an Australia/ PNG resource partnership in finding solutions to global problems under the Minamata Convention on Mercury. The Australian company Clean Mining and Square Circle were implementing partners for the project. The Technical Demonstration took place in the Wau-Bulolo region, in partnership with the MRA Training Centre.
