Interactive Behavioural Analytics
Interactive Behaviour Analytics (IBA) team
Mission statement
We deploy techniques from data science, human-computer interaction, and the behavioural sciences to help us understand and influence people’s behaviour and their interaction with/through data, systems, and other people.
What do we do?
We focus on solving problems that emerge from the intersection of humans and data. We turn human data into knowledge and aid in the industry adoption of data driven technologies by making them more usable, understandable, and trusted by end users.
We run a number of projects all focussed around the intersection of humans and data:
- Trust – we look at the conditions under which humans do and do not trust machines and what aids in the appropriate calibration of human trust.
- Human factor in cyber-security – we look at the interaction between cognitive variables and cyber-security, in order to determine factors that impact decision making and human behaviours and attitudes.
- Personalised and persuasive technologies – we look at how people respond to machine generated personalisation and what persuasive interventions can improve the uptake of personalised services.
- Cognitive Load measurement – we look at methods for assessing mental workload, resulting in a spin-out company, book, patents, publications, and new technologies measuring human workload.
- Transparent Machine Learning – we look at how humans interact with ML, in order to make ML more visible, explainable, trustworthy and transparent, for a wider impact of ML in real-world applications.
We use traditional HCI and ML research methods, as well as physiological signals, cognitive psychology methods, and qualitative methods. Our capability contributes to a number of research and business activities.
What’s special about us?
We are a cross-disciplinary team that contributes to creating Australia’s data-driven future by addressing the “last mile” challenges of the Analytics program.
We have demonstrated our research excellence with 70 publications in the last five years (including 20 in top-tier venues), keynote talks and tutorials presented, a number of international conferences chaired, a book published by Springer, and patent applications filed and granted.
We engage and collaborate with the academia, industry, and government alike, to assist in large-scale innovation and situate our work in environments, where new technologies and data driven approaches have tangible outcomes for Australia and the world.
