3D-AGB: Modelling the three-dimensional distribution of aboveground biomass

Project leaders: Shaun Levick (Environment) and Peyman Moghadam (Data61)

Project Description: This project focuses on quantifying the spatial distribution of aboveground biomass (AGB) in three-dimensions for improved trust and transparency in carbon markets. Project components span the optimisation of workflows for deriving AGB from LiDAR point clouds, scaling to larger areas through Deep Learning models built upon active satellite remote sensing on a cloud-based platform, and clear propagation and visualisation of uncertainty through scales.

Project Goals: Trust and transparency in carbon markets

Project outputs:

  1. Datasets, tools, and workflows for estimating biomass using LiDAR point clouds and SAR imagery
  2. Visualisation of uncertainties associated with different AGB estimation approaches
