Traditional Owner-led Monitoring and Reporting in the Great Barrier Reef

We are supporting Great Barrier Reef Traditional Owners to develop and implement integrated monitoring of their Indigenous Heritage values.

In phase one of the project, the Strong Peoples-Strong Country framework was developed for the integrated monitoring and reporting program through a Traditional Owner-led process.

Now in phase two, CSIRO is supporting Traditional Owners to implement pilots of the monitoring and reporting program in selected communities, using the Strong Peoples-Strong Country framework. This project aims to address a recognised gap in monitoring of Indigenous use, dependence and well-being in the Great Barrier Reef region, and ensures that efforts to address this gap are led by Traditional Owners.
