Enabling adaptation pathways

March 25th, 2021

Adaptation pathways help decision makers account for the range of possible futures in their decisions today.

Global drivers including climate change are creating unprecedented challenges for decision-makers in communities, governments and industry who are responsible for planning for an uncertain future.  The future is likely to be increasingly more challenging with the potential for unprecedented widespread impacts and loss, such as the 2019/2020 summer and COVID pandemic.

Adaptation pathways is a low-regrets approach that accounts for these potential futures, helping decision makers identify, explore and sequence possible adaptation strategies, investments, decisions and actions over time.  We have developed, in partnership with stakeholders, numerous tools and processes to help people plan for the future. These tools have been specifically designed to support decision makers and researchers to diagnose adaptation problems and explore the social, environmental and economic costs and benefits of a range of adaptation initiatives.

This approach has been used to:

  • Guide investment decisions at global, national and community scales
  • Implement disaster risk reduction and proactive planning for emergency services
  • Inform strategic financial investment for businesses
