  • Awanthika Senarath (PhD scholarship at UNSW Canberra) submitted her thesis for examination in December 2019, with Dr Marthie Grobler and Dr Nalin Arachchilage as supervisors.
  • Dr Mehwish Nasim, with researchers from University of Adelaide and University of Muenster (Germany) received approval for funding, under the Daad Australia-Germany joint research cooperation scheme, for the years 2020-2021. The funding covers travel and lodging etc., so that researchers can do exchange visits. The topic of the proposal revolved around “misinformation and polarisation”.  The scheme was very competitive and only 49 projects from all over Australia got successful.
  • The Adelaide team is welcoming their first summer intern, Minh Nhat (Alex) Nguyen in collaboration with the Human Centric Security Team.
  • Dr Sushmita Ruj served as Co-Chair of Indocrypt 2019  held at Hyderabad, India, December 15-18, 2019.

November 2019

  • In the November 2019 Software and Computational Systems Awards cycle, DSS team members were recognised for their accomplishments. Dr Marthie Grobler received the Woman in Science award, Dr Seyit Camtepe received the Collaboration award and the SMIT Boeing team (Dr Surya Nepal, Dr Dongxi Liu, Dr Raj Gaire and Seung Jang) received the Customer First award.

July 2019

  • In July 2019, DSS has welcomed a new Security Data Science team, based in Adelaide, focussing on developing and applying techniques from mathematics, statistics and computer science to identify and analyse cyber security and national security threats, using open and closed source data.
