GBR 4K model: surface salinity in the central GBR during the period of high flow (Jan – Mar).

GBR 4k model : Passive tracers input at all the river open boundaries with a value of zero (the passive tracer was initialized to 35). The impact of the rivers in the salinity solution is often confounded with low salinity tropical water advected from the north and low surface salinity due to rainfall, which is rapidly mixed out. The passive tracer allows only the impact of freshwater from the rivers to be assessed.

To demonstrate the stratification present during the high flow period, potential density along the section (black line) and time series & profile at a point (blue dot) are presented below.

Surface potential density on 10 Feb 2009.
Figure 1: Surface potential density on 10 Feb 2009.

Time series of potential density (5 day frequency) at the blue dot above.
Figure 2: Time series of potential density (5 day frequency) at the blue dot above.

Section of potential density on 15 Feb 2009.
Figure 3: Section of potential density on 15 Feb 2009.

Profile on 10 Feb 2009.
Figure 4: Profile on 10 Feb 2009.

This animation of the potential density section (5 day frequency) along the black line (above) shows the temporal evolution of the surface stratification due to the freshwater input into the lagoon.
