Deep drainage nitrogen losses from banana cropping

In the soil, fertiliser nitrogen is dissolved in the soil water. Whenever rain or irrigation occurs, soil water moves deeper into the soil - taking the nitrogen with it. Heavy rain or excess irrigation can move fertiliser nitrogen deep below the root zone - out of reach of the crop.

At CSIRO, we solve the greatest challenges through innovative science and technology.
