This project is focused on generating insights related to the flow of water and nutrients in farming systems (sugarcane and bananas) and assessing which interventions can be useful in reducing nutrient runoff.

Deep drainage nitrogen losses from banana cropping

In the soil, fertiliser nitrogen is dissolved in the soil water. Whenever rain or irrigation occurs, soil water moves deeper into the soil – taking the nitrogen with it. Heavy rain or excess irrigation can move fertiliser nitrogen deep below the root zone – out of reach of the crop.
