CuBAS – Sedimentology and Cu, Birrindudu Basin, NT

The prospectivity for a sedimentary basin to host copper is often hindered by the lack of understanding of the mineral system at play. In this project we will provide a fundamental dataset including sedimentology and petrography to aid exploration targeting.

The Northern Territory Geological Survey (NTGS) and CSIRO commenced a joint collaboration project (2022-ongoing) aimed to investigate the potential of the Birrindudu Basin as a sediment-hosted copper mineralisation target.

The project aims to develop robust sedimentological, stratigraphic and sequence stratigraphic frameworks of the Birrindudu Basin. Further, the mineral potential (specifically copper) of the basin will be evaluated using existing drill core, petrographic and geochemical studies of potential source and host rocks, as well as known intervals of anomalous copper.

The results will be published by the NTGS and presented at various events and conferences.
