Towards enhanced resilience in the pig farming industry

June 28th, 2024

We are thrilled to announce the launch of the National Innovation Alliance for Pig Biosecurity – an initiative, borne from the devoted minds at CSIRO’s Aus4Innovation program and the National Institute of Animal Sciences. This platform will safeguard the livelihoods of hardworking smallholder pig farmers by preventing and combating diseases through innovative biosecurity practices.

Pig farming in Vietnam has faced significant challenges since 2019, notably from the devastating outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF). With the majority of Vietnam’s pig farming comprised of smallholders, strong biosecurity practices and standards are fundamental to building a resilient industry. The launch of the Alliance marks a significant commitment to protecting the livelihoods of farmers, contributing to the overall sustainability of Vietnam’s pig industry.

Let’s roll up our sleeves and make a difference, hand in hand!

Dr. Kim Wimbush, Director of Aus4Innovation program speaking at the workshop about Australia’s commitment to supporting Vietnam as it develops a robust, resilient food and agriculture sector.

Dr. Pham Cong Thieu, General Director of the National Institute of Animal Sciences sharing about the alarming biosecurity risks to the pig farming industry in Vietnam and the establishment of the National Innovation Alliance for Pig Biosecurity.

Dr. Jennifer Manyweathers, representative from Charles Sturt University (Australia) presenting the findings from the study which assessed vulnerabilities and resilience against African Swine Fever within the pig value chain.
