Supporting Vietnam’s pig farming industry through innovation & collaboration

October 23rd, 2025

African Swine Fever (ASF) remains a major challenge for Vietnam, with 648,000 pigs lost due to 1,780 outbreaks in 2025 alone. Under the Australian Government’s Aus4Innovation program, the Vietnam National Innovation Alliance for Pig Biosecurity is bringing together farmers, researchers, and policymakers to improve biosecurity practices and protect livelihoods.

The Alliance hosted a lively workshop to share study findings on the vulnerability of small-holder pig farmers to biosecurity risks and diseases, such as ASF. This highlighted critical practices that can help small holder pig farmers keep their pigs healthy and avoid diseases entering their farms. More importantly, meaningful discussions with actors across the pig value chain helped inform updated biosecurity guidelines that are tailored to Vietnam’s unique farming context, ensuring resilience and sustainability.

These outcomes are the fruitful result of a collaboration among CSIRO – Australia’s national science agency, Charles Sturt University and Vietnam’s National Institute of Animal Sciences.

Stay tuned for updates from the Alliance as we work towards a stronger future for Vietnam’s farmers!
