Innovating Aquaculture in Ca Mau

July 16th, 2024

In Vietnam’s southernmost point, Ca Mau Province holds a gem within –  the thriving heart of the national aquaculture scene, especially famous for its shrimp and crab production. Last week, the province demonstrated its pledge to sustainable practices and forward-thinking strategies during the “Innovation in Aquaculture and Technological Solutions for the Shrimp and Crab Industry” workshop. Supported by our Aus4Innovation program, the workshop brought together a packed audience of over 100 stakeholders, from Australia’s national science agency – CSIRO representatives to local officials and scholars. They converged at this dynamic junction to not only share Australia’s agricultural innovations but also to tailor these insights to the unique challenges faced by Ca Mau’s aquaculture sectors.

As a strategic element of the larger “Innovation Policy Evaluation Framework” project – a collaboration between CSIRO/Data61 and Vietnam’s Ministry of Science and Technology, funded by Aus4Innovation – the workshop’s dialogs aim to refine policy development, using Ca Mau’s shrimp industry as an evaluative case study.

It’s a pleasure to be forging stronger bonds between scientists, farmers, and businesses to elevate Ca Mau’s aquaculture to the next level!

Attending the workshop were representatives of the Department of Science and Technology and Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Soc Trang, Bac Lieu, and Kien Giang provinces, research institutes and universities, local governmental agencies and businesses of Ca Mau Province.

Dr. Pham Thu Hien from CSIRO shared about challenges facing the Vietnamese shrimp industry such as environmental challenges, market challenges or technical and social responsibility requirements from importing countries, and innovative solutions applicable to Vietnam.
