CSIRO is conducting research to showcase the advantages and applications of quantum computing. Emphasis is on quantum annealing for materials modelling and process optimisation, including the data-constrained modelling, in collaboration with global leaders in quantum-annealing quantum computers. Quantum annealing is a relatively mature quantum computing technology. A quantum annealer generally has a larger number of qubits than a gate-model quantum computer for solving relatively large problems. Our research focuses include improving quantum computing efficiency, hybrid quantum-classical computing for large problems, and delivering high-impact applications. The research paves the way for the development of a quantum-computing-based materials modelling technology platform that will position CSIRO and the collaborators as leading global providers of the technology to a broad range of industries in the manufacturing, minerals and other sectors.
