ACCESS CMIP6 Public Wiki
CMIP is a project of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP)’s Working Group of Coupled Modelling (WGCM). Since 1995, CMIP has coordinated climate model experiments involving multiple international modeling teams worldwide. leading to a better understanding of past, present and future climate change and variability in a multi-model framework. The central goal is to advance scientific understanding of the Earth system.
CMIP defines common experiment protocols, forcings and output, and has developed in phases, the current being the sixth phase, CMIP6. CMIP model simulations have also been regularly assessed as part of the IPCC Climate Assessments Reports and various national assessments.
The CSIRO Climate Change Centre will be submitting model data to CMIP6 from three versions of ACCESS – ACCESS-CM2, ACCESS-ESM1.5, and ACCESS-OM2/OM2-025.

CMIP6 Background:
The scientific backdrop for CMIP6 is the WCRP Grand Science Challenges:
- Clouds, Circulation and Climate Sensitivity
- Changes in Cryosphere
- Climate Extremes
- Regional Sea-level Rise
- Water Availability
- Near-Term Climate Prediction
- Biogeochemical Cycles and Climate Change
CMIP6 Science Questions
- How does the Earth System respond to forcing?
- What are the origins and consequences of systematic model biases?
- How can we assess future climate changes given climate variability, predictability and uncertainties in scenarios?
A total of 33 organisations are in the process of contributing to CMIP6:
CSIRO also contributed to CMIP5 using two previous versions of ACCESS (v1.0 and v1.3). In a comparison of ACCESS models against other CMIP5-contributed models, ACCESS performed very well:
