Investigating atmospheric optical properties at Garden Island

October 29th, 2018

In May 2018, the Australian Defence Science and Technology Group commissioned the AIRBOX to support a project to better understand the connection between atmospheric composition and atmospheric optical properties.

AIRBOX is a lab-container, bringing together the best of Australian atmospheric composition research together. This was the second major field campaign for the infrastructure, having visited Mission Beach in 2017.

The large suit of instruments, measuring gases and aerosols concentrations, and aerosols composition and optical properties, was deployed on the western side of Garden Island, south west of Perth and home of HMAS Sterling (Navy Base). The 4-week field campaign allowed to measurements of both clean air from the Southern and Indian Oceans, and several smoke plumes from hazard reduction burning east of Perth.
