Hard subsurface layers in sandy soils.

Many Australian sandy soils have hard layers that prevent root penetration and reduce access to nutrients and water deeper in the soil profile. Compaction and natural subsurface hardening can coexist, but recognising how and where in the profile hard layers exist can support effective management decisions.
