Local Voices

CSIRO has developed a way to give communities an opportunity to express their views and experiences about mining activity that occurs alongside them. Our approach enables a dynamic interaction that aims to increase understanding on all sides, build trust, and strengthen relationships. It builds upon knowledge gained from Australian and global communities through CSIRO research over the past decade.

CME has partnered with CSIRO to apply this CSIRO approach. The approach is called Local Voices.

Between March and May 2019, people living and working in the South West region of Western Australia were invited to share their views on issues related to mining activities via an online survey. CSIRO collects and analyses the data, and presents it back to the community and CME in useful ways, so that clarity and understanding improve between the groups, and the industry is better informed regarding issues of concern to the communities.

All community members living and working in the South West region were encouraged to take part. For every completed survey, participants received tokens that they allocated to their chosen eligible not-for-profit community group, and these can now be converted to cash for the group’s use.

The survey has now closed – results are now available!
