Oceans&Atmosphere / SIMA Austral launch in Santiago Chile

November 21st, 2017

Santiago, 3rd of August 2017

Aiming to revolutionize the industry of aquaculture, the Minister of Economy, Development and Tourism, Luis Felipe Céspedes – along with the national director of Sernapesca, José Miguel Burgos and the Executive Director of CSIRO Chile, Dr. Orlando Jimenez – presented the project “Integrated Management System of Aquaculture” (SIMA Austral), an initiative that seeks to collect and process the information present in aquaculture to deliver strategic information.

This platform will improve decision-making processes and thus promote the development of an aquaculture that is both sustainable and internationally competitive for Chile, thanks to a better health diagnosis and biosafety capacity (onset of diseases in aquatic animals, for example); monitoring and modelling environments, permitting to anticipate conditions of high environmental risk (harmful algae blooms, red tide, etc.), among other aspects.

This initiative will allow the monitoring and environmental modelling to anticipate high-risk environmental conditions, reducing the use of antibiotics and increasing productivity, among other aspects.
