From Data to Decision-Making

Insight and decisions need information

Aboard the RV Investigator, SEA-MES scientists’ journey to Australia’s south-east marine region, carefully revisiting sites first studied over 25 years ago. They take video of the seafloor, collect water, and biological samples—each capturing a snapshot of the ocean’s hidden dynamics.

But collection is just the beginning.

While the work is still underway, the goal is clear: that this refined data will not remain locked in scientific files, but instead become the foundation for smarter, evidence-based decision-making. From informing fisheries management and marine park planning to supporting climate resilience strategies, SEA-MES aims to ensure its data travels far beyond the research vessel—into the hands of those shaping Australia’s marine future.

Powerful computers support this process both onboard and ashore, helping transform raw measurements into usable datasets. Through expert cleaning, calibration, and contextualisation, seemingly abstract data becomes clear, actionable insight.
