As an additional resource for the RiskWi$e project team, Dr Brendan Brown has arranged regular reading club events with guest presenters on prevalent topics.

Two sessions have been run to date, with the details following:

  1. A review of types of risks in agriculture:
What we know and what we need to know

Presented by Dr Adam Komarek, Senior Lecturer in Agribusiness, The University of Queensland

Risk in agriculture is a well-trodden topic: risk creates reward, upside & downside risk, context matters, several types & sources of risk/uncertainty exist.

A recording of the session can be found at: Session 1 – A review of types of risks in agriculture.
  2. Risk and Nitrogen Application Levels
Presented by Prof Alfons Weersink, Professor at Ontario Agriculture College, University of Guelph

Alfons is a leading applied agricultural economist who focuses on summative works that inform government, policy makers and producer organizations of the expected impacts of a particular proposed policy or practice. Alfons’ research is often interdisciplinary and extends across all species of livestock animals and crops, allowing his work to easily transition to newly developing areas of concern in agriculture.

A recording of the session can be found at: Session 2 – Risk and Nitrogen Application Levels.
  3. Risk and Diversified crop-livestock farms
Presented by Dr Lindsay Bell, Principal Research Scientist  with CSIRO Agriculture and Food.

Based in Toowoomba, Queensland, Lindsay’s research focusses on improving the sustainability, productivity and resilience of farming enterprises through greater integration of crops and livestock and improved crop rotations.

A recording of the session can be found at: Session 3 – Risk and Diversified crop-livestock farms

Planning for the fourth RiskWi$e reading club is under way, with a focus on behavioural science. Keep an eye out for details to come out shortly.
