John Phalen
Science Lead, Safe Waste Initiative
- John Phalen has been leading the Safe Waste Initiative since 2019. Prior to joining CSIRO, John was appointed by the Premier of South Australia to head up the government’s response to the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Royal Commission. Prior to that, John spent nearly ten years in the oil and gas sector overseeing research and development initiatives to mitigate the social and environmental impacts of the CSG/LNG industry. John has an extensive background in translating the needs of government and industry into mutually beneficial partnerships, including how to build advocacy from impacted stakeholders. John has qualifications in business, social science and project management.
