Integrated soil management

The Soil and Land Management (SLAM) Phase 2 project aims to improve the resilience of food systems through sustainable soil management and timely access to soil information.

The project brings together ACIAR, SPC and MWLR as well individual agriculture departments.  It builds on work through Phase 1 in Tuvalu, Kiribati as well as Fiji, Tonga and Samoa (Read more Pacific Soils).soil and land managers from Fiji, Samoa, Tonga and Vanuatu.

Phase two is focused on addressing knowledge gaps around soil organic carbon and nutrient management in the Pacific through building the capability of the next generation of agronomic advisors and establishing networks to support practice change in Pacific farming systems.

Four pathways to impact have been identified:

  • Cross-nation knowledge infrastructure,
  • Effective soil information access,
  • Building long term capability through soil and agronomic capacity, and
  • Building networks and effective policy.
