CSIRO and Food Systems

Inside a food testing facility with large stainless steel vats

We are drawing on capability and science from across CSIRO to respond to food system challenges and opportunities.

Food systems are not just about agricultural production. They comprise all the elements and activities related to producing, processing, distributing and consuming food. Food systems also include the governance and economics of the food system, its sustainability, food waste and impacts on the economy, environment, society, and health.

Our work brings together different parts of the agrifood system to work together on addressing complex challenges, such as climate change, nutrition and non-communicable diseases.

We draw on capability and science from across CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, building on work over many years in partnership with Pacific scientists. CSIRO has research and technology that spans the entire food system, from food production and manufacturing to biosecurity, nutrition, sustainability, marine science, soil science, energy, and water management.
