About

Biodiversity is the variety of all living things. It includes differences within species, between species, and among ecosystems.

Measuring biodiversity

Terrestrial biodiversity data were developed using a habitat-based approach to biodiversity assessment.

Expected biodiversity patterns in a natural state were combined with changes in ecosystem condition over time.

Data are provided separately for 2 types of biodiversity features:

  1. nationally listed threatened species
  2. all native species in broad taxonomic groups (vascular plants, birds, reptiles, fungi).

Yearly patterns of expected status are made by mixing satellite data with historical biodiversity patterns (before European settlement) and field observations.
