UN River Risks
Marine debris researchers Qamar Schuyler, Lauren Roman, Britta Denise Hardesty and Chris Wilcox have recently published a report assessing the risk of plastic pollution to migratory species in the Ganges and Mekong Rivers. The report was prepared under the UN’s Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) and was launched at the recent fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA5) in Nairobi.
The report maps plastic hotspots and assesses the risk of plastic pollution to migratory species protected under CMS in the Ganges and Mekong River basins. It focuses on the impacts of plastic pollution on freshwater and terrestrial species – which has been significantly understudied. It also provides a methodology for assessing risk in areas where data availability is low or non-existent.
