Establishing a Baseline of Marine Plastic Litter in the Philippines

Early November Kathy and Denise held a project closing meeting in Manila (Establishing a Baseline of Marine Plastic Litter in the Philippines), marking an important milestone in CSIRO’s efforts to tackle plastic pollution across the Asia-Pacific region. The meeting kicked off with an inspiring welcome from the Australian Ambassador HK Yu, who reiterated the importance of this project in strengthening Australia’s strategic partnership with the Philippines. The Ambassador noted she was excited to announce funding for the project’s second phase and continue growing our joint impact in the region.

Following the Ambassador’s remarks, Undersecretary Teh from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Philippines Government shared insights on the project achievements and the journey so far. Kathy provided a comprehensive overview of project highlights, showcasing the impact and progress we’ve made together. We also heard from our dedicated partners, who shared key learnings, challenges, and opportunities for continued collaboration. The meeting concluded with a thoughtful closing by Denise, reinforcing our commitment to long-term, sustainable change. Together, we’re creating a cleaner, healthier future for the Philippines and beyond! 🌊💙

Partners from 12 institutions highlighted their interest in evaluating policy and behavioural change as priorities, as well as technological advances and how to support change in business practices by providing sustainable alternative packaging in different communities within the Philippines.

Thank you to everyone at CSIRO who was involved. We look forward to seeing what Phase 2 will bring.
