Philippines Baseline Project – Subic Training Event

March 21st, 2023

The Project’s first plastic litter monitoring training and capacity building programme was held from the 16 – 21 February at Central Park Reef Resort, Olongapo, Zambales. Eighteen participants from the Environment Management Bureau (EMB) attended, along with two trainers from Davao del Sur State College (DSSC) and seven additional DSSC technical partners with previous training and experience in the CSIRO survey methods. The first day and a half of training were classroom style lectures followed by in-field practice that covered the inland, river and coastal monitoring survey methods. During this in-field practice, participants practiced using the ODK application for data entry as well as becoming familiarised with the map of sites to be surveyed during the field campaign. Once the group had completed their formal training they were ready to commence the plastic litter survey campaign. The group was split into 5 teams (each lead by a CSIRO or DSSC trainer) that each went afield and conducted surveys. All teams re-grouped on the last day with a farewell dinner and certificate ceremony.
