Justine Barrett

Research Technician & PhD Student
CSIRO Environment
Justine is a marine debris researcher leading the stormwater litter prevention work. Her PhD is aimed at reducing plastic pollution from reaching our waterways and oceans via improving litter capture in stormwater systems across Australia. She excels in project management, including stakeholder liaison, operational/fieldwork aspects and problem solving.
Justine believes in the importance of industry involvement in research and therefore works very closely with the stormwater industry. Justine is a director on the board of Stormwater Australia, is on the executive team of Stormwater NSW, and is involved in various projects advocating for improved stormwater treatment practices.
Justine started working on marine debris research at CSIRO in 2017, where she established a method for detecting microplastics in deep-sea sediment and was subsequently the lead author of a paper publishing the first global estimate of microplastics in deep-sea sediment.
Justine has over 25 years of experience working in the science industry in technical, teaching and research roles. A career highlight was being selected for Homeward Bound, a ground-breaking leadership initiative, set against the backdrop of Antarctica, which aims to heighten the influence and impact of women in making decisions that shape our planet.
