DCCEEW – National plastic pollution monitoring & storm water project
CSIRO marine debris researchers are working in partnership with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment, and Water (DCCEEW), to achieve the following outcomes by December 2025.
- Conduct stakeholder engagement, produce a baseline data report and undergo a national monitoring program to understand and build on information/data regarding Australia’s plastic pollution.
- Develop a national plastic pollution web-based portal that can house existing and new pollution data collected by multiple stakeholders Australia wide. Download Portal FAQ sheet
- Develop a framework for estimating the impacts of ingestion and entanglement on vertebrate marine taxa in Australian waters.
- Evaluate current approaches and state of knowledge of the roles and effectiveness of storm water drains for reducing plastic leakage to the marine environment including conducting a pilot project in multiple jurisdictions.
