Restoration and nature-based solutions for urban areas

Urban marine ecosystems are among the most degraded and modified areas in the world. How can we repair and manage them?

Urban marine ecosystems are the most degraded and modified in the world, and are in need of immediate repair. However, restoration in these areas is often limited by environmental, social and regulatory barriers. The diversity of users in marine urban areas translates to multiple conflicts of interests, limiting space for restoration. Successful restoration strategies need to account for environmental, ecological and socioeconomic barriers from planning to execution. Moreover, restoration and nature-based solutions need to consider the emerging risks of these heavily modified environments including pollutants and invasive species mobilization.

This project aims to design a framework to develop such strategies by combining ecological and social science techniques.
