Extracting value from large volumes of livestock data, gathered from geographically dispersed locations is a task that modern “Cloud” database platforms are well suited for. CSIRO, along with our partner ABRI, have enabled this powerful technology to be accessible by developing the Livestock Information Platform (LIP). LIP has combined a flexible and secure data store along with complementary supporting tools to allow data providers to be able to economically manage phenotype, genotype or climate data for the purposes such as consolidation, benchmarking or analysis. Data stored in LIP by users remain under the control of the user, who can use LIP’s versatile access controls to make data available to the public, specific users or kept securely private.
LIP has been chosen by clients to be the core technology behind several diverse custom applications. These include:
• A historic pasture experiments database application for researchers.
• A document, paper and picture archive store and search application
• An accessible and efficient livestock genotype and phenotype store for research scientists.
• A welfare benchmarking archive and application for improving livestock welfare outcomes
• A prawn farm environmental and production database application to assist farm managers and researcher advisors to accelerate improved productivity.
