In-Situ Laboratory Project Achievement

April 11th, 2025

We are excited to share that the Harvey 5 well has been successfully drilled at CSIRO In-Situ Laboratory research facility located in Cookernup, 140km south of Perth.

With the completion of this well, plus the Harvey 6 monitoring well that was successfully drilled in 2024, this marks a major step forward in the joint research between CSIRO and Japan’s Research Institute of Innovative Technology for the Earth (RITE), aimed at improving how we monitor and understand fault behaviour in geological carbon storage (CCS) projects.

The In-Situ Laboratory research facility includes the demonstration of field-based deployment of multiple conventional and innovative monitoring technologies —including the fibre optic Distributed Strain Sensing (DSS)—which will advance subsurface fault monitoring and help de-risking future CCS operations.

A huge thank you to all our collaborators, technical teams, local partners, and stakeholders whose expertise, commitment, and support made this possible.
We are especially grateful to the local Harvey community and broader stakeholders from the wider region, Western Australia, Australia and globally for their engagement and trust throughout the process.
With drilling completed, we now look forward to the next phase of field demonstrations and research.
