Reports from ARENA Funded Hydrogen Energy Activities

April 7th, 2021

Several new hydrogen-related reports have been added to the ARENA Knowledge Bank, including a mid-term summary report and individual mid-term activity reports for the 16 ARENA-funded research projects announced in September 2018.

ARENA continues to publish reports from its hydrogen energy funding activities

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has published a considerable number of reports arising from its hydrogen energy funding activities. These reports cover a wide range of project and research activities, including technical and economic evaluations, permitting and regulatory matters, and community engagement and perception aspects.

Since an initial Features articles published at the time of HyResource launch in October 2020, several new hydrogen-related reports have been added to the ARENA Knowledge Bank, including a mid-term summary report and individual mid-term activity reports for the 16 ARENA-funded research projects announced in September 2018.

Key hydrogen-related reports included in the ARENA Knowledge Bank follow below.

  • ARENA Funded Hydrogen Projects and Reports

This document summarises the hydrogen projects that have received ARENA funding as at 3 August 2020. (Note: In November 2020, ARENA announced AUD$2.6 million in funding to Horizon Power to support construction of the Denham Hydrogen Demonstration Plant project.)

  • ARENA Funded Hydrogen R&D Projects: Summary of Mid-Term Reports

This report (March 2021) summarises key aspects and results to-date from the 16 ARENA-funded research projects announced in September 2018.

The mid-term activity report for each of these 16 research projects can be found at the ARENA Knowledge Bank webpage (by clicking on Hydrogen Energy under the Category filter).

  • Clean Energy Innovation Hub

This presentation (November 2019) discusses the lessons learnt from the completion of ATCO’s Clean Energy Innovation Hub in Jandakot, Western Australia.

This report (December 2019) discusses project outcomes and lessons learnt in integrating renewable energy assets and hydrogen, and in introducing the latter into a natural gas distribution system in a microgrid test environment (hosted at the ATCO operations Centre in Jandakot).

  • Toyota Ecopark Hydrogen Demonstration (Toyota Hydrogen Centre)

This presentation (November 2019) discusses the lessons learnt from the development of the Toyota Hydrogen Centre project in Altona, Victoria.

  • Queensland Nitrates Renewable Hydrogen and Ammonia Project

This report (June 2020) discusses the main aspects of the QNP green hydrogen to ammonia project feasibility study.

  • Dyno Nobel Renewable Hydrogen Project

This report (July 2020) presents the outcomes of an engineering and economic feasibility study to evaluate the construction of a renewable hydrogen facility for production of feedstock for the Dyno Nobel ammonium nitrate facility in Moranbah, Queensland.

  • Yara Pilbara Renewable Ammonia

This report (October 2020) details proceedings on the demonstration-scale renewable hydrogen and renewable ammonia production and export facility on the Burrup Peninsula, Western Australia.

  • Renewable Hydrogen Deployment Funding Round

This presentation (March 2020) was used as part of the information and consultation forums for this funding round. It contains general materials on renewable hydrogen in Australia.

  • Renewable Hydrogen Market Report

This report  provides an understanding of the challenges, impacts and opportunities of producing renewable hydrogen, and therefore renewable ammonia, at a commercially relevant scale. At time of writing, the ARENA site advises the report is being updated.

  • Hydrogen Communities Report, H2City Tool and Assessment Framework

This selection of materials (Hydrogen Communities – June 2019) provides a brief review of selected global and Australian case studies, a description of the H2City assessment framework, and a description of the functionality and assumptions of the H2City Tool (that can be used to assess the costs and benefits of a regional town or municipality switching to hydrogen).

  • The Australian Public’s Perception of Hydrogen for Energy

This report (December 2018) discusses the Australian public’s response to the expanding opportunities of hydrogen for export, transport and domestic use.

  • Hydrogen for Australia’s Future – A Briefing Paper for the COAG Energy Council

The aim of this report (August 2018) was to flag the scope of Australia’s hydrogen potential and frame discussions for development of a national hydrogen strategy.
