Recent advances in AI and robotics have renewed interest in the potential impact of automation on human society. How are cities, the most resilient form of human organization, prepared for this disruption? Humanity’s transition towards mega-cities highlights the importance of this question, since job opportunities in cities are a major driver of urban growth. Using an urban physics approach, we explore how city size and skill composition may drive differential impact of automation on different urban ecosystems.
