Biography

Ikechukwu has a background in surveying and geoinformatics. He is a current PhD candidate at Griffith University and joined the Sustainable Groundwater Futures team in 2023 based on the CSIRO’s Postgraduate Studentship Program. He is being supervised by Christopher Ndehedehe (Griffith), Mark Kennard (Griffith) and Sreekanth Janardhanan (CSIRO).

Ikechukwu’s research is focused on the application of cost-effective remote sensing methods in localized monitoring of groundwater dynamics. He is also applying these remote sensing methods to understand the impacts of water extraction and drought on groundwater resources over Australia. As part of his PhD work, he has been involved in downscaling the GRACE data to make it suitable for use over aquifer-scale regions. His downscaling techniques have been applied in some important aquifers across Australia, including the Cambrian Limestone Aquifer, Perth Basin, and Gnangara Mound, in a bid to improve groundwater monitoring in these regions.

He is currently investigating ways to integrate downscaled GRACE data with InSAR to improve understanding of groundwater-induced geomechanics, especially in regions where managed aquifer recharge is used.
