Biography
Dr Hofmann is a Principal Research Scientist at CSIRO and is a member of the Sustainable Groundwater Futures team at CSIRO. Harald joined CSIRO in January 2024 after 10 years at the University of Queensland in an academic teaching and research role. His research interests include understanding large groundwater systems, surface water / groundwater connectivity, coastal aquifer and ecohydrology, with a major focus on geochemistry and isotope tracing across these fields.

Harald’s current research interests include the development of conceptual groundwater models, including groundwater flow and quality characterisation of coastal aquifer systems and sedimentary basins. He is a leading expert on perched groundwater system linked to groundwater dependent ecosystems on sand islands and future resilience of groundwater connected surface water bodies. He is also leading research in rock/gas/water interactions for potential carbon mineralisation.
Harald is affiliated as an adjunct associate professor with the School of Environment at the University of Queensland and currently co-supervises 4 PhD students.
