Biography
Dr. Lei Gao has over two decades of pioneering research in complex systems modelling, sustainability assessment, and adaptive management, with a focus on integrated modelling and assessment of coupled human and natural systems. He is a recognized expert in national-scale sustainability modelling, AI- and machine learning-based (AIML-based) predictions for water and landscape dynamics, and adaptive water resource management under climate extremes. Dr. Gao has been bringing his extensive expertise to address pressing environmental challenges. His work combines innovative research with practical solutions, enhancing sustainability and informing environmental policies through advanced computational tools and analytical methods.
His recent work leveraged AIML-driven models to improve the accuracy of groundwater resources predictions (see references 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6) and optimize resource management strategies (see references 7, 8, and 9). These efforts provide new insights into sustainable groundwater and land use practices.

Contribution of Australia’s land-sector towards six nationally downscaled SDG targets
He has authored over 140 peer-reviewed journal papers, including two publications in Nature, with his research widely cited and featured in media outlets such as China Daily. Notable contributions include his leadership in the world’s first national-scale modeling and assessment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of Australia’s National Outlook project.
