Jan Schultz
Biography
Jan is a PhD student at Flinders University and CSIRO. He did a Master’s degree in Earth Sciences at Leibniz University Hannover (Germany), including a one-year study abroad at Stockholm University as part of the ERASMUS program. His studies and interests centered on soil science, as well as multiplatform remote sensing and geographic information systems (GiS) applications. He has also experience in international and multidisciplinary research projects (e.g.: Cruise report Sonne 257 [SO257], WACHEIO – Western Australian Climate History from Eastern Indian Ocean Sediment Archives, Darwin – Fremantle).

Figure 1: Coherence Change Detection map of the Townsville area in Queensland, based on Sentinel-1 data, showing soil roughness changes after heavy rain in early 2019. Negative values indicate decorrelation of the radar signal and potential soil erosion.
As part of his PhD, Jan is currently working with Dr. Pascal Castellazzi (CSIRO), Professor Okke Batelaan (Flinders University) and Associate Professor Eddie Banks (Flinders University) towards the production of large-scale, radar-based soil erosion maps for protection of the Great Barrier Reef (Fig. 1).
