Biography

Dr John Radcliffe AM, FTSE, is an Honorary Research Fellow in the Groundwater Systems team and Groundwater Management group of CSIRO’s Environment business unit, based on the Waite Campus in Adelaide.

His primary activities include reviewing developments in water resource management and their adoption towards achieving greater water resource and environmental security including moving towards completion of the water resource cycle through use of water recycling, either via aquifer recharge or directly through “fit for purpose ” adoption. In many cases, these uses will be linked to systems increasing agricultural productivity.

John has a background in agricultural science and a wide range of professional experience encompassing being Director-General of the South Australian Department of Agriculture, a Commissioner of the Murray Darling Basin Commission, an Institute Director and later Deputy Chief Executive of CSIRO responsible for the agricultural and environmental pursuits of the organisation. Since retirement to become an Honorary Fellow, John has served as a Commissioner of the National Water Commission and Chair of the research management committee of the Australian Water Recycling Centre of Excellence. He remains a trustee of several not-for-profit trusts that provide support to Australian and overseas early career scientists developing careers in agriculture. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) Australian Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology (ATA), the Australian Society of Animal Science (ASAS).

Recently, John has been responsible for the co-editorship of a text “Challenges and adaptation opportunities for the Murray-Darling Basin in response to Climate Change”.

John conducts his work in conjunction with an extensive network of colleagues, particularly within ATSE as well as CSIRO.

John is an author of >120 publications including journal papers, conference papers, client/technical reports and agricultural extension articles encompassing dairy, crop, livestock and agricultural policy research, water resources, water recycling and the water energy nexus.
