Our Group

CSIRO’s Groundwater Management Group has around 40 groundwater scientists in 5 research teams who work across Australia and the region. Our teams are based in Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth.

We have leading national capability in environmental tracer analysis; groundwater modelling, uncertainty, and sensitivity analysis; as well as hydrochemistry, hydrogeology and groundwater systems characterisation and assessment. The Groundwater Management Group delivers independent science to inform decisions on the sustainable management of groundwater resources at local, regional and national scales.

Our innovative field, laboratory and modelling investigations and assessments support communities, industries and the environment across Australia, South Asia and the Pacific. The Groundwater Management Group leads high-impact, multi-disciplinary assessments and investigations to support safe and sustainable water supplies.

Our science informs risks to water security under different climate, emissions, water management and resource development futures.

The Groundwater Management Group’s core capabilities are:

  • Aquifer and aquitard characterisation and assessment: Design and development of novel and cost-effective methods to measure subsurface properties, structures, and interactions
  • Environmental tracer hydrology: World-leading noble gas measurement infrastructure to improve understanding of groundwater systems
  • Geodesy, remote sensing and spatial analysis
  • Groundwater in a variable climate
  • Groundwater interactions with surface water, ecosystems and society
  • Managed aquifer recharge: Expertise in managing health and environmental risks during MAR scheme development and operation
  • Noble gas measurement and interpretation
  • Regional-scale hydrological and unsaturated zone modelling
  • Risk assessments using spatial causal networks
  • Uncertainty analysis and optimisation
  • Collaboration, engagement, and project management
  • Open and transparent communication and engagement with people from government, industry, First Nations and other communities.
