Rapid Assessment Platform for Environment Changes (VRAP)

December 3rd, 2020

VRAP uses information from earth observation data to support decision-making of urban planning and management.

Rapid urbanisation with significant development of industries and commercial services in coastal cities has created a multifaceted pressure on the urban environment, causing various adverse changes in the coastal landscape and especially the coastal water quality.

As part of the DFAT’s Aus4Innovation portfolio, CSIRO has partnered with the Vietnam National Space Center (VNSC) to build a platform, known as V-RAP or Vietnam Rapid Assessment Platform, that gives insight into the way the urban landscape and coastal water quality is changing in Vietnam. Based on Open Data Cube technology, the platform will unlock access to a repository of Earth observation data that authorities can use to inform the urban development.

The platform will be piloted in Ha Long and Rach Gia cities of Vietnam, enabling the relevant authorities to undertake remedial action if the changes are problematic. The platform can also determine the wider implications of the changes, which will help decision-makers accurately assess the impact of future urban land-use planning and development.
