Innovation Platforms for Improved Rural Livelihoods in Vietnam

December 5th, 2020

Innovation platforms create sustainable agricultural livelihoods.

Agriculture involves many inherent risks, including biophysical risk, market risk, farming technique and management risk, and policy risk. Farmers are therefore in need of different kinds of support for sustainable livelihoods in a fast-changing environment.

In 2019, CSIRO and Can Tho University researchers established an Innovation Platform in partnership with local government agencies and private business companies to help a farm cooperative conduct a new production model – freshwater shrimp with rice crops in the coastal areas of the Mekong Delta. The model was proven to be sustainable to the local conditions, addressing food safety concerns, providing environmental benefits, and improving incomes. The Innovation Platform has effectively supported the local community in transition to adaptive and sustainable livelihoods.
