A roadmap for an Australian edible insect research & industry

December 6th, 2020

Eating insects is delicious, nutritious & sustainable. CSIRO is working on a roadmap to support the Australian edible insect industry.

Producing sufficient protein to feed our growing population is a global challenge that will not be met using current food sources alone. The dominant protein sources of the western world have high environmental and production costs. In contrast, complementing our diet with insects, promises high protein diets without the costs. Insects as food is a rapid growth market in Europe and the USA. Yet, Australia lags behind, even though it has immense insect diversity and a long history of insects as an important food source for First Nations people.

CSIRO is working to bring together leading scientific and traditional knowledge of native Australian edible insects to promote their inclusion in our diet, drive commercialisation opportunities and bring cultural benefits. We are delivering a roadmap to support the Australian edible insect industry.
