CSIRO Copyright Licence Deed for Specimen Images with Restricted Access
CSIRO Restricted Specimen Images
A specimen image may be designated restricted if:
- it contains information allowing the viewer to determine the location of rare, endangered or threatened species identified by Australian jurisdictions as vulnerable to poaching or disturbance by human activity
- the terms of donation of the specimen to the CSIRO collections prohibit sharing publicly
CSIRO has an obligation to restrict these images to use by scientific researchers, and federal, state and local government land managers with a demonstrable need to know this information. CSIRO has an obligation to restrict access to images of specimens displaying location information on specimen labels as part of the image – this is particularly relevant to images of herbarium sheets where the label is integral to the sheet and is part of the image.
Only a small proportion of the many thousand CSIRO specimen images are restricted.
Licence
People needing access to these images will need to be affiliated with a research organisation, federal, state or local government or other organisation with a clear need to access these images.
The organisation will need to enter into a specific licence agreement with CSIRO, specifying their use of the images and with the condition that the material is not passed onto 3rd parties or made available to others outside of the organisation without the location information redacted, or in the case of donated material subject to conditions, without adhering to those conditions.
How to get access?
Select the restricted images in your Data Access Portal search results and use the “Request” function. This will open a form asking for user information, affiliated organisation and a brief outline of intended use. The National Research Collections Australia staff will contact you using the contact details you enter and negotiate access to the requested images.
CSIRO reserves the right to deny access to restricted images.
