Download using S3 compatible software

Overview | S3 Compatible Software Clients | Opening S3 Compatible Software from your Browser

Overview

You can use various software clients to download files from S3 storage.  Some S3 compatible software can be launched from your browser, but for others you may need to manually configure your connection.

S3 Compatible Software Clients

Most S3 compatible software clients should be able to download files from the DAP.  If you don’t know what software to use, we suggest:

Operating System Suggested Graphical Software Client Suggested Command Line Software Client
Windows

WinSCP

rclone (version 1.60.1 or higher)

AWS CLI

MacOS Cyberduck rclone (version 1.60.1 or higher)

AWS CLI

Unix-like OS N/A rclone (version 1.60.1 or higher)

AWS CLI

Follow the links in the table above for guides on how to install and configure the software.

In our testing we found that rclone provided the best performance on fast network connections.

Opening S3 Compatible Software from your Browser

Some software, like WinSCP and Cyberduck, can open from the browser.  Assuming you have one of these programs installed you can do the following:

  • Go to the “Files” tab of the DAP collection and click the “Download” button (it is not necessary to select any files first)

  • Select “Download files via S3 Client”

  • Click “Request files”

  • If you agree to the licence conditions, click the checkbox and then “Accept”

  • Click “Open S3 Client”

  • Your web browser may prompt you to allow popups for the Data Access Portal.  If so you must allow popups.
  • Your web browser may prompt you to allow the link to be opened by an application.

If using Chrome – Windows: Click “Open Pick an application”

If using Edge – Windows: Click “Open”

  • If using Firefox – Windows: Click “Open Link”
  • If using Safari – MacOS: Click “Allow”
