Download using Globus

Overview

Globus is a product for transferring large amounts of data quickly between different storage locations. You can download data from DAP collections to a storage location of your choice using Globus.

Creating an account

You can create an account using your organisation credentials, log in with a GitHub, Google, or ORCID iD, or create your own (free) Globus ID.

Downloading Globus Connect Personal

Although Globus is accessed through a web browser, downloading and installing the Globus Connect Personal app will add two important functions:

  1. It allows the ability to download multiple files at once
  2. It allows you to download files to a directory on your own computer

With this installed you will still access Globus in the same way through a web browser but the app will automatically run in the background adding the extra functionality.

Installation instructions can be found here: Globus Connect Personal Installation

During the installation process you will create and name a Collection in the same directory where the app is installed. This will effectively become a download destination for files, unless you choose to transfer them to another Collection.

Downloading files with Globus

You must have a Globus account to use this service. If you don’t have an account, see the “Creating an account” section

It is also recommended to download and install the Globus Connect Personal app, in order to download multiple files at once.

  1. In the DAP collection’s “Files” tab, click “Download”

2. Select the option “Download files via Globus File transfer”

3. Review the licence conditions.  Links to more detailed information about the licence appear below the description.

4. If you agree to the licence conditions, tick the box and click “Accept”

If you do not yet have a login, see the “Creating an account” section

5. Click on the link to the Globus File Manager and/or copy the web link to access the collection later. This link will only work with your account and is not useable for any other user.

6. The Globus file manager will open. You will see the collection file folders in the file manager. Click “Transfer or Sync to” (or the split screen view option) to navigate to the the download destination.

7. Click in the search bar to find a list of collections to download to.

If you have not installed the Globus Connect Personal app, see the Downloading Globus Connect Personal App section

8. When you download and install the Globus Connect Personal app, you will have created a collection on your personal computer, which will now be visible as an option. Click on the collection that will be the download destination.

9. You will be taken back to the split screen view where you can now select the files or folders to download. Click “Start” to begin the transfer.

Globus limitations

Download multiple files

Globus is primarily set up to transfer and sync files across different collections, rather than downloading individual files to a folder in your computer. Therefore the “Download” button in the Globus file manager (which is Globus web browser) has limited functionality and will only become available when a single file is selected. To download multiple files at once you need to install the Globus Connect Personal app and use the “transfer or sync to” option in the file manager.

Read only access

You access to a DAP collection using Globus will be read-only. Although the delete button will become visible, and the user journey for deleting files can be completed and confirmed, the file will still be in the collection as soon as the “refresh list” button is pressed.

Similarly, although the “upload” button becomes visible and the user journey for uploading files can be followed, it will end in an error and files will not be uploaded.

Incorrect “Last modified” date showing

Some files and folders will display a “last modified” date as 1/1/1970. This is due to the system not having any metadata for this field and this is the default date it displays instead.

The link provided at the DAP download screen for later access to the collection cannot be accessed by any other Globus account. An error message will appear if you try to access the collection using a link other than your own.
