Water Resource Management
CSIRO’s holistic research approach to water aims to develop science and solutions for Australia and our neighbours to meet the growing water demands of cities, agriculture, industry and the environment.
We are undertaking comprehensive scientific assessments of current and future water availability in major water systems across Australia to provide a consistent framework for future water policy and management decisions.
We use our assessment and risk modelling expertise to help sustainably manage Australia’s groundwater resources.
Australia has vast resources of coal and onshore gas, including coal seam gas, shale gas and tight gas. CSIRO research is aimed at improving understanding of Australia’s coal and gas resources and developing sound and proven technologies to ensure it is developed efficiently, and in a socially and environmentally responsible way.
Developing tools and methods that deliver data and information for understanding and managing our environmental resources.
International water research and development
We are working to generate knowledge and catalyse innovation to inform policies and strategies for water, food and energy security in major river basins of the world.
The CSIRO’s Gas Industry Social and Environmental Research Alliance (GISERA) is a collaboration between CSIRO, Commonwealth and state governments and industry established to undertake publicly-reported independent research. The purpose of GISERA is for CSIRO to provide quality assured scientific research and information to communities living in gas development regions focusing on social and environmental topics including: groundwater and surface water, biodiversity, land management, the marine environment, human health and socio-economic impacts. The governance structure for GISERA is designed to provide for and protect research independence and transparency of research outputs.
